Alembic / Peavey Alembic F-2B Stereo Preamp & Peavey CS400 Stereo Power Amp mid-to-late 1970's Mounted in Anvil Road Case Owned by Roy Chaney / The Count Five
For your consideration, we present the working bass rig of a true Rock & Roll innovator.
In 1964, Roy Chaney and John "Mouse" Michalski founded the short-lived-yet-iconic psychedelic rock band, The Count Five, in San Jose, California. Their most-infamous hit from 1966, "Psychotic Reaction," is lauded by historians as one of the first "proto-punk" songs of its kind and Michalski's fuzz tone on this track is nothing short of legendary.
Though The Count Five officially disbanded in 1969, Roy Chaney continued on his musical journey as a working and touring musician, with the legacy of "Psychotic Reaction" following him along the way. This setup was his live workhorse rig, providing him with wall-rattling power and a classic and memorable bass tone. This Alembic F-2B Stereo Preamp is serial number #1218 and most-likely dates from the late 1970's to early 1980's. Tube-driven by two 12AX7's and designed after the Fender Dual Showman, the Alembic was the "secret-weapon" preamp of choice for the likes of David Gilmour, Jerry Garcia, and Bootsy Collins". Mounted underneath the F-2B in a sturdy-and-roadworn Anvil Road Case, we have a fully-functional commercial-grade Peavey CS-400 Stereo Power Amp, of which Roy Chaney is the documented original owner (original warranty card included). Providing 400 watts of raw power (200w per channel), this heavy vintage slab served Chaney well in any live situation and would be suitable for providing backline power for a small club all on its own.
Paired with a robust single cab or a pair of capable cabinets, this rig will continue to carry on the legacy of The Count Five and ROCK HARD.
Who knows: this one might cause a Psychotic Reaction for you!
This rig is in Very Good "Player Grade" condition, having seen heavy gig use in WHO KNOWS HOW MANY smokey bars. The Anvil case is worn but fully-functional, with front and rear covers present and all latches tight and intact. The F-2B and CS-400 have been mounted in this Anvil case for DECADES. As a bass rig, both channels of the Alembic and the Peavey have been tested and function as inteneded. Channel A of the Peavey was most-likely used more than Channel B, as the level pot is scratchy when the amp is on. This package includes two cables for stereo connection between the amp and preamp and the original Peavey Warranty Card from 1978 printed in Roy's name. This rig is being sold AS-IS.
