Gibson Melody Maker D Modded 1964 - 1966 - Cherry with Original Alligator Case
The Melody Maker in this body style began production for Gibson in 1961. The standard model was available with one single coil pickup and options were available for a 3/4 scale version as well as a full-scale 2 pickup version - as seen here. This guitar came to us from an estate, so it's history is shrouded in mystery. There is evidence of this guitar originally bearing a vibrola system; this hardware was removed and the previous owner opted for a much-less-troublesome wrap-tailpiece. Our tech surmises that this guitar was refinished at some point in its life in a original Cherry red and the holes for the vibrato were subsequently filled and finished over. The bridge pickup was changed at some point in its life to what appears to be a Bill Lawrence L-250B rail-style single coil. The original tuning machines were replaced sometime in its life with a vintage set of Ibanez-branded Gotoh-style tuning machines.
This guitar is in Good condition. showing signs of restoration and refinish and careful storage. The guitar has been modified from stock as detailed above. There are some mild scrapes and bumps on the body. When the refinish was performed, the red stain unfortunately colored the side markers and the sides of the nut. We are not sure if this guitar retains its original frets but we estimate it has 60-70% of its frets left and would benefit from a refret in the future. This guitar was recently set up by our expert techs with a fresh set of Curt Mangan 10's. This package includes its original alligator chip board case.
