Maurice Dupont MD20 Maple Petite Bouche Gypsy Jazz 1991 Owned by Paul Mehling - Natural with K&K pickup
For your consideration, we present the Genesis of Maurice Dupont's Petite Bouche in Maple.
According to legend, Maurice Dupont cut down the maple tree used on this guitar with his own hands. This MD20 example was originally purchased by the late Santa Cruz Guitars Emeritas and World Music enthusiast Paul Hostetter who was, at the time, representing Dupont Guitars stateside. The Godfather of American Gypsy Jazz, Paul Mehling, purchased the guitar from Hostetter in 2005 and this instrument graced stages with Mehling for nearly 20 years.
Previously set-up by Tommy Davy at Djangoguitars.com, this MD20 has had a recent overhaul at Keith Holland Guitars in Los Gatos, CA, by shop owner Robert Witmeyer, our lead tech Jaxson Cottrell, and Ron LaFrance of Lafrance Luthiers. When the guitar arrived to us, we could clearly see that it had been "rode hard and put away wet," as there was significant wear to the top of the instrument in the playing area and in the armrest area and the brass bridge was severely tarnished. Our team took extra care to thoroughly clean the top in the offensive areas and to apply a new layer of French Polish to protect the instrument for its next owner. The original tailpiece was removed and given a deep clean and polish and a new piece of green leather was added underneath to match the wraps of the new set of Optima loop end gypsy jazz strings.
This MD20 is LOUD, crisp, and cutting, and is quite possibly the nicest Dupont example we've had the pleasure of playing. Its battle scars and roadwear have been masterfully and tastefully managed with the player in mind for many years to come.
