Sonora Gypsy Jazz Round Hole Restored by LaFrance Luthiers 1950's - Natural with Soft Case
For your consideration, we present another masterful restoration by LaFrance Luthiers.
According to the luthier responsible for the restoration, Ron LaFrance, this unmarked Gypsy Jazz guitar resembles an example played by manouche great Hono Winterstein, with a dead giveaway of its identity being its 13-fret-to-the-body construction. Upon arrival, this instrument was far beyond playing condition, with condition issues such as cracks on the top, a warped neck, inferior tuning machines, bracing that was failing in some places and too bulky in others, and a heavily worn original finish. As LaFrance is both no stranger to a challenge and a fearless man-of-action, he undertook this project for his own education and pleasure, with the end result being a sonorous working tool suitable for the most discerning player.
Several cracks in the top were cleated and flooded with cyanoacrylate (CA) glue. A bridge brace was reshaped for optimal resonance and a longitudinal Spruce brace was added to the back for stability. LaFrance dissected the severely-upbowed neck and installed Carbon Fiber reinforcement as well as a new Rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlays. More new parts to this project include a fresh set 21x 6150 Frets, new Schaller tuning machines, a new Selmer-style bridge with moustaches, and a new bone nut with fresh tone felt. The reverse of the neck originally has several dents which were filled with CA glue and sanded level. The original finish was severely worn, so the entire instrument was sanded and refinished with a fresh French Polish.
This is a tasteful restoration of a 70+ year-old instrument, with care taken as to not "over-restore" and maintain the original identity of this classic piece. Ron LaFrance's efforts have bestowed a second life to this instrument, which now waits in our showroom for its next forever home.
