Sonia started playing banjo in 1973, and studied with Craig Smith for two years and later with Tony Trishka.
She started playing in bands in 1976, and began teaching guitar about that same time. Sonia enjoys teaching children of all ages!
Sonia has been playing cello and guitar since ’68. She played with the band Sidesaddle for nine years, recording three albums with them. Sonia has also been a member of Harmony Grits in Santa Cruz, The All Girl Boys and various other groups.
She has been teaching banjo continuously since 1984, and is currently studying, recording and performing Bossa Nova, Boleros, and original music.
Sonia became certified to teach Alexander Technique in 2008. Alexander Technique is a wonderful body work that helps ease in playing and singing. It is also used by actors and anyone who wants to use their bodies more efficiently.
Every Monday she teaches a Bluegrass Jam Class. The goal of this group is to get accustomed to playing in an ensemble, learn typical bluegrass material, try out chords, and (gasp) improvising. Having fun is encouraged. There is also a yearly recital.
